About Us

History of the firm

The firm traces its history from 1933, when a young Trevor Holmden, having returned from World War I and many overseas experiences, set up practice on his own account in Auckland City.

Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Trevor was joined in partnership by ‘Mac’ Horrocks, and together they created “Holmden Horrocks & Co”.

The long connection between the firm and the Automobile Association stems from this period.

Over subsequent years, the firm has appointed new partners, has absorbed other practices, and has continued to deliver quality service to an ever-changing range of clients. Throughout however, the original name has remained essentially unchanged – apart from dropping the “& Co” some 25 years ago as a nod to modernism!

Partners and staff of the firm have been recognised from time to time either becoming admitted to the inner bar as Queens Counsel (as they were) or with judicial appointments to the District Court, the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Duncan Bamfield joined the firm in 1959 as a partner, worked tirelessly for many decades and has subsequently retired – several times! Duncan is our oldest living former partner.

Over the years the firm has always followed its own course – not succumbing to the many amalgamations amongst other firms, maintaining its branch structure (previously also having representation at Helensville, Kumeu, Pakuranga), and being the first law firm to bring automated accounting into the practice of law.

This independence of thinking and upkeep of its distinctiveness has enabled the firm to continue as a player in the Auckland legal scene since 1933.
